Willis Creek

Willis Creek’s yellow sandstone and striped layering create a novel enjoy amongst Southern Utah’s slot canyons.

Description

Willis Creek is a slim canyon with sculpted sandstone partitions that tower as much as 300 feet above the flow in some places. At the fitting time of day, daylight mirrored from the yellow walls casts a warm golden glow all over the canyon. The flat, stony streambed provides a nice stroll via shady and scenic narrows. A couple of small, hidden waterfalls give a contribution to the canyon’s captivating personality. Willis Creek often contains a small amount of water. The stream is shallow, and seldom more than two or 3 ft vast.

The Hike

From the parking area, move Skutumpah Road. Find the trail about Forty feet north of the point the place the move crosses the street. The path to begin with follows along above the creek. The canyon partitions start to seem, and the circulation stage step by step drops 10 or fifteen ft underneath the path. After a short distance, the path cuts down and joins the creek mattress. Even although the partitions listed below are no more than 15 ft top, the sculpted rock is a visible treat and foreshadows larger issues to come back. Before heading farther down the canyon, walk upstream a short distance to a small waterfall that slices through the sandstone.

Continue downstream past a few twists in the canyon. The first set of narrows is small however stunning. The walls are about twenty or thirty ft high, and the canyon width is set ten or fifteen feet. After a few hundred ft, the walls retreat and the canyon opens up once more. Enjoy the outdoor for a time, prior to the creek cuts down via a flat sandstone slab. Hug the wall to the left of the creek above the small cliff band. The path negotiates down to join the creek backside once once more. Be sure to appear again up the canyon, the place the creek forms another small waterfall hidden in a sandstone alcove.

Shortly after this waterfall, the canyon slims right down to the second one narrows. Again, it’s now not just like the claustrophobia-inducing or cave-like slots that can be found in different places within the area, it’s engrossing nevertheless. The yellow walls are deeply scalloped, with curious overhangs.

The partitions pull back momentarily prior to once more constricting all the way down to the third narrows. This is a real slot canyon through maximum definitions. Here the canyon ranges from 5 to 10 feet broad and likely over one hundred ft deep. The sidewalls are scalloped and striped, vying with any other southwestern slot for mesmeric allure.

After exiting this slot, the canyon walls draw back, and regularly widen. Trees and brush develop from the canyon floor, and along small sandy benches that seem around the canyon bends. Averett Canyon joins Willis Creek from the North, but it will probably’t be explored from this route because of an impassable dry fall about 100 ft upstream. Willis Creek continues until its confluence with Sheep Creek a few mile from the last slot.

Getting There

From Cannonville, head south on Main Street, which turns into Kodachrome Way. Follow this road from HWY 12 for 2.Nine miles, till you see a mud highway flip off to the proper (south) from Kodachrome Way. This is Skutumpah Road. Follow Skutumpah Road for six.2 miles to reach the Willis Creek Trailhead, which is at the west aspect of the road.

Travel along Skutumpah Road is simple when the road is dry. It is most often well-graded and clean. The road is occasionally muddy around Willis Creek due to the running water. Furthermore, the amount of water within the creek can range considerably depending on climate. When coming near from the north, the parking area is off to the proper sooner than the creek crossing. From the south, smaller pull-offs may also be found no longer too far from the trailhead. When Skutumpah Road is rainy, it's in most cases impassable (even for four wheel drive cars) due to sections of deep and extremely slippery clay. Don’t try strive the road if there's still snow on its floor. Melting snow soaks deep into the clay, growing deep bathrooms very best for trapping jeeps.

The hike is simple to observe. It’s just over two miles from the parking area to the confluence with Sheep Creek. All of the narrows are found throughout the first mile of the hike.
